A Winner!

T.E. Jones, Davy's prized thoroughbred horse, named for his daughter Talia, came in First Place at Gulfstream Park on Sunday, April 18th 2004. Davy and the band were performing in Orlando at the EPCOT Flower Power Festival when they received the news. Davy had every confidence that T.E. would triumph and she did not disappoint! T.E. Jones was jockeyed by Hernan Parra.

Update on Talia's Marathon

Talia finished the Marathon in 4 hours and 32 minutes! The race was in Hawaii, and Davy surprised Talia by traveling to Hawaii to watch her compete! Talia was thrilled to have her Dad on hand, and gave Davy her finisher's medal from the race!

Thanks to everyone who helped sponsor Talia by sending in a contribution to the National Aids Marathon.

Chance encounter brings Davy Jones to Septemberfest

An Eagan festival that bills itself as "the biggest little block party in the 'burbs' "may not rival the Basilica Block Party in Minneapolis, but it'll be blessed by a special event this year.

The Davy Jones Band, led by the former lead singer of the Monkees, will headline the three-day Septemberfest with a performance Sept. 23 on the grounds of Faithful Shepherd Catholic School in Eagan.

The four-member Monkees band was recruited in the 1960s to fill a set on a TV show. The band soon became a musical sensation, producing several albums and top hits, including enduring favorites such as "I'm a Believer, "Last Train to Clarksville" and "I'm Not Your Stepping Stone." About a year ago, the Rev. Charles Lachowitzer, of St. John Neumann Catholic Church in Eagan, met former Monkees' backup guitarist Mark Clarke at a Rome airport. The priest and a group of parishioners had made a pilgrimage to Rome.

Clarke asked Lachowitzer where he could get blessed medals for his daughters, who attend a Catholic school in Liverpool, England. "The church doesn't sell blessed articles," Lachowitzer said. "I said, 'I doubt the airport in Rome would have something like that.' Then I said, 'I do have two medals.' " Lachowitzer gave him two that had been blessed by Pope John Paul II. "I figured it was one of those celebrity encounters, and I would never hear anything again."

But Clarke e-mailed Lachowitzer to thank him for the medals, and he e-mailed again later, saying he was performing at a Catholic school fundraiser with the Davy Jones Band in Chicago, and could they do the same in Eagan? Indeed, they could.

Proceeds will go to Faithful Shepherd, a K-8 school with 580 students that was built in 2000 by Lachowitzer's parish, St. Thomas Becket Catholic Church in Eagan and the Catholic Church of St. Peter in Mendota.

Last year's debut Septemberfest drew 3,000 people and raised $30,000 for the school.

Besides raising money, the block party seeks "to reach out into the community and generate greater awareness for our school," said Mary Haugen, one of many Septemberfest volunteers. "We all felt that our event was a huge success last year, and the whole school is buzzing with
Davy joining our lineup this year."

The festival runs Sept. 23-25 at the school at 3355 Columbia Drive, Eagan. It will include more bands, including Johnny Holm on Saturday night, carnival rides, games, food and an outdoor mass.

No admission fee will be charged to enter the festival grounds or attend afternoon concerts.

Separate tickets will be sold for rides, food, beverages, a raffle and Friday and Saturday night concerts.
